Cork Oak (Quercus Suber)

Another important economic activity in the area is the removal of cork from the cork oak. The intense orange colour that you see on many of the trees have had their cork removed over the summer. It takes 8 to 9 years for nature to regenerate its bark to a thickness suitable for its removal once again. There are numerous factories in the sierra which process the cork and sell it on to manufacturers across Spain and Portugal.
