How to get from Seville to Alajar by car:
Total journey time – 1¼ hrs.
• From the airport turn right out of the carpark and follow the road up over a bridge in the left hand lane following signs to Seville. You join the A4 motorway heading towards Sevilla for one junction only (Salida 535) signed ‘Merida A66’/ SE 020 I de la Cartuja. Follow this ringroad, skirting Seville for a few Km until you reach a large roundabout, with a large stadium on your left, where you need to follow signs for the SE 30 “Todas direcciones” (all directions). Go over a long bridge following signs Merida A 66/E803.
• Once you have crossed the bridge, several destinations are indicated. Follow the blue motorway signs to Merida/ Portugal A66/E803 taking the first exit right at the end of the bridge where you join the A66/E803 Merida motorway (autovía).
To Aracena ⇓
• Follow the motorway A66 northwards towards Merida for some 35kms until you see the exit signs for “Aracena” and “Portugal” where you join the N630 for about 1 km before branching off onto the N433 heading NW. This road is marked off with kilometre posts all the way to the Portuguese border. At km 86 the road bypasses Aracena.
• As you reach the first roundabout go straight on (ignore signs to Alajar to the left) following signs to Portugal and Los Marines. You skirt around Aracena and go straight on at the next roundabout.
• Just after km 96, approx 8 km, turn left at the sign to Fuenteheridos and Peña de Arias Montano
• Continue along here, go past a fork to the right after 600m and, after a further 400m, you’ll come to a roundabout,
To Alajar ⇓
• Take the third exit following signs to Alajar, Peña Arias Montano and Hotel Rural Posada Alajar. Continue along – there is a great view at the mirador at the top of the hill – and continue down the other side.
• At the T junction turn RIGHT ignoring the sign to Alájar. Due to a one-way system at the weekends, it is easier to reach Posada San Marcos if you turn right (direction Santa Ana/ Portugal) and continue along the HU8105 for 1 km and enter the village by the Avenida El Chacón (ignoring the first entrance you pass on your left, which your device may tempt you down!)
There are now NO ENTRY (except residents) signs at all the entrances to the village. However, as your destination is within the village you are permitted to enter in order to load and unload. We have agreed with the town hall that if there is parking available within the village there won’t be a problem for you to leave the car as long as it is correctly parked. There may be someone on duty especially at weekends and bank holidays just let them know you are coming to Posada San Marcos and they will let you through. Half way along Avenida El Chacón is the entrance to the public carpark. Once you have got your bearings you might find it easier to leave the car here during your stay, it is only a 5-minute walk to Posada San Marcos.
To Posada San Marcos ⇓
Continue along the main street Medico Emilio Gonzalez until you reach the main square and turn right into San Bartolomé Street, heading towards the church tower, passing a bank on your right. Turn left at the tower and continue along this street (San Marcos) with the church on your right. Keep right as the road opens into a “square” and fork right into Antonio Millá Street. Take the next right into Parroco Manuel Mora Street and Posada San Marcos is at the end of this street. Turn right and reverse into Calle Colon. If there is a parking spot on the opposite side of San Marcos let your passenger out and grab it quick!
Weekends and bank holidays are usually very busy and the townhall often makes the town centre pedestrianised, which means that the entrance to the square will be cut off. You need to turn right into Constitución Street, which is unfortunately two way and you may meet oncoming traffic. It can be tricky I’m afraid, but most people are used to this and some manoeuvring will be necessary to pass each other. At the end of Constitución turn left toward the church and then right immediately after the church into San Marcos Street.
If there is no parking spot available, let us know you have arrived by ringing the doorbell on the right hand side of the door at the top of the steps, (it’s a large house so please be patient!) we will help you unload and explain where to park. Parking on corners is not allowed (in theory 10m but they are more lenient here!). You will probably see many cars parked on corners especially at weekends however we do ask you not to as it really does cause circulation problems.
